My Odd Dog
He canters through the house.
Making wrong turn after wrong turn
he searches the house for the one who calls his name
“Blue, Blue come, Blue come here.”
He comes to a halt and cocks his head to the side
He listens for the caller.
Then he makes a break towards the sound.
His old paws start slipping on the hardwood floors.
He has remembered that he does not know how to walk on hard wood floor
He freaks out!!!
Blue starts his slow and shaky retreat to the safety of the carpet.
Then uncertainly glances at floor.
He will not start his journey back out on to the floor until he hears “come on good boy, you can do, come on blue, come here good boy.”
Only then will he gradually make his cautious journey to the other side of the kitchen.
Then comes summer.
The sound of kids splashing and screaming in the cold pool.
Blue starts to smack at the water as though he is checking the temperature.
A kid bounces out of the pool to try and get him in.
With a big huff and a puff he is pushed and goes sprawling out into the water.
He looks like a kid learning to swim
He is vertically upright in the pool, waving above his head begging for help.
I swim to him and lead him to the steps
He runs out of the pool and retreats to the far corner of the yard. Recording here:

I like the word choice you used, for example canters. I also like the detail in your poem
ReplyDeleteGood poem. I like how you use detail and interesting vocab in your poem.
ReplyDeleteI love how you describe your dog tries to learn to swim, as my dog hates the water and can swim, but looks really funny when he tries.
ReplyDeleteI love the line "He freaks out!!!" This one line makes me want to shout "He freaks out" when I read it.
ReplyDeletevery descriptive and you used a lot of imagery in your poem
